... unidentified saboteurs recently blew up the main pipeline carrying water to Mahmodiya, a sizeable town in Baghdad outskirts.
“They (the saboteurs) had dug a two-meter hole in the ground where they had placed their explosive charges. The explosion blew up the pipeline, disrupting water supplies to Mahmodiya and the outlying villages,” he said.
“We sent a team of engineers and workers with an earth-moving machine to repair the damage. The team members were kidnapped, the machine stolen and its driver killed,” he [senior Baghdad municipality official] said.
Another team, this time under the protection of tribal leaders, was also targeted.
“The contractor was kidnapped and the machines involved in the repairs were looted,” he said.
A third attempt, under armed protection, was foiled when insurgents bombed the area with mortar shells.
“Members of the third repair team sent to Mahmodiya had to flee. Leaving behind their equipment,” he said.
