An Iraqi member of al-Qaeda has taken over the position of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Jordanian born gang leader of the terror organization in Iraq, reporters said.

Al-Qaeda commander in Iraq requested al-Zarqawi relinquish his political position to focus solely on the group’s military activities after making a series of poor judgments that damaged the image of rebellion, said Jordanian Hudayfa Azzam, son of Abdullah Azzam, Osama bin Laden’s radical mentor.

In accordance with the decision, Abdullah bin Rashed al-Baghdadi was chosen almost two weeks ago by al-Zarqawi to undertake this new role in Iraq, Azzam said.

Al-Zarqawi made a series of political mistakes for which he was criticized both inside and outside Iraq, said Jordanian, Hudayfa.

Al-Zarqawi took a misstep when he came up with the idea of launching attacks against Iraq’s neighboring countries as an Iraqi leader of independent group, Azzam added.
