California-Organizers of a beach memorial honoring U.S. service members killed in Iraq have decided to stop making wooden crosses for each victim when the number of fatalities hits 3,000, members said.
The local chapter of Veterans for Peace began erecting crosses in the sand each Sunday to mark military deaths on Nov. 2, 2003. At the time, there were 340 crosses in the display, which is set up and taken down in a single day by volunteers near Stearns Wharf.
Daniel Seidenberg, president of the chapter, said the large number of crosses has become difficult to manage, and members agreed Monday to stop at 3,000.
"There's now over a ton and a half of crosses," Seidenberg said.
